In 1900, George Eugene Lafaye settled in Columbia, South Carolina, and established an architectural firm known for exceptional design and uncompromising standards. His work helped shape the character of the city, and his vision can still be seen today in some of Columbia’s most admired historic structures.
Notable commissions include the downtown YMCA, St. John’s Episcopal Church in Shandon, the Township Auditorium, the War Memorial Building, the Wade Hampton State Office Building, and the James L. Tapp Department Store. Lafaye also designed numerous luxury homes throughout Forest Hills and Heathwood, including 13 residences in M.C. Heath’s original Heathwood subdivision, now considered a staple collection of Columbia’s historic high-end homes.
That tradition continued with his son, W. Lucas Lafaye, who earned his degree in architecture from Clemson University in 1939 and later became president of Lafaye-Tarrant Construction Company. Over the next 45 years, Lucas Lafaye and Guy Tarrant led the completion of many significant commercial projects throughout Columbia and the surrounding region.
